Science Alert 03

This gorgeous baby echidna is Babbin, one of two puggles born at Perth Zoo in December 2012. This is a world-first, as Babbin and Nyingarn are the first offspring born from zoo-born echidnas.

What do a weta and a whale have in common? Both of them rely on lipids to hear. Weta detect sound with the eardrums on their front legs. The sound is then transmitted through a liquid-filled cavity to the hearing organs. The lipid helps transmit the sounds and may also help amplify quite sounds.
